First paragraph: Bacterial viruses come in many shapes and sizes, and they have many different lifestyles. In this chapter, we describe the life cycles of selected phages which are the best-studied examples of phages in groups that carry pathogenesis genes. In addition, we present the processes of specialized and generalized transduction, which are important for the transfer of pathogenicity genes from one bacterium to another.
